Growing up I’ve always lamented the fact that I am not artistic. I can’t draw a straight line, let alone illustrate. A few years ago I came to learn that cooking is my art. The culinary process brings together so many of my passions – the balance between creativity and structure, the opportunity to experiment, an awareness of my Jewish identity by observing the laws of kashrut, the ability to bring friends and family together (to eat) and a chance to make others feel happy. It also allows me to account for my own bizarrely particular food aversions.

I am particularly thankful for the opportunities provided by my professional work with Camp Ramah in California to express my culinary interests. During the summer I prepare a dairy lunch each week for various members of our senior staff. This is always a bit challenging since my resources (ingredients, equipment and TIME) are a bit limited, but the outcome is usually pretty terrific. I have also started a tradition where members of our senior staff prepare a deluxe dessert oneg one Friday night each summer featuring a variety of delectable goodies. Once the summer is over I am also host a Shabbat dinner for all high school seniors who participated in one of our staff training programs. Shabbat dinner is my favorite meal to prepare and the opportunity to cater a meal for 50 hungry eaters yields a feeling of great satisfaction.

I am delighted to share with Irene and her readers various recipes I have developed or adapted.
