Dear Anita,

Your memory may be fading. He used to gesture with his hands and describe an animal that curled up and he said had “long needles” but that whenever he pet it, it would keep it’s needles closed?? Now do you remember?

I did the same thing with one of Micah’s bunnies. Put it out in the sun and it was too hot. Oh well, we tried to make them happy. I am sure our birds were the only ones that had custom brocade covers.

Hi, Irene.

You make me smile and laugh with all the great stories about our family because I don’t have the same memories. Daddy never told me anything regarding “pets” in Poland. I don’t think there was such a concept. He definitely never ever mentioned a porcupine. He did love birds and I think that when we lived in New York he was finally able to make a home for a “pet” by making a home for parakeets and canaries. We would go to the pet store iin Macy’s on 34th Street to buy a parakeet or a canary when one died. I personally think it was too hot in our apartment. He sewed a cloth cover to cover the cage at night so they could sleep. It matched another slipcover he made for the sofa. Do you remember?

Great recipe. Sounds delicious.
